KALEVA – Members of the Kaleva Art Gallery think of U.S. military veterans every November, and this year they were looking for a way to honor them for their service, according to KAG member Cynthia “Cindy” Asiala.

During November, members of the public may pay tribute to a veteran by visiting the gallery at 14449 Wuoski Ave. and entering a service member’s name in a drawing to win one of two wall hangings created especially for veterans.

The words that make up a quote are superimposed on the snow in black lettering and they say, The land gives so much to me that in turn I want to give back to it. On the left is a print by Glenn Wolff that is mostly black with some white outlines of trees, spiraling tree roots, a partial moon, prayer flags, stars, comets, spirals, birds flying in the night sky, the backs of a woman and her dog next to a lake. On the right is a painting by Nancy Adams Nash of a whimsical white figure with small head and huge hips and a heart-shaped red area over where the heart would be on a person. Next to the figure are a series of almost square boxes. The largest box appears to be on the ground next to the figure and subsequent boxes are smaller and appear to recede in the distance or climb the wall next to the figure. Each box is hooked to the one above it by one corner. Inside each box is a small line, and each line inside the box is a different color. The art exhibition is called: Glenn Wolff and Nancy Adams Nash: Land and Myth. Showing now through April 13. Hardy Hall Gallery open Wednesday thru Sunday, Noon to 3 p.m. Free Admission. “No purchase is required, but there is much to peruse during open hours,” Asiala said of the gallery’s displays of arts and crafts.

One of the wall hangings honors the Marines; the other recognizes all branches of the military. They were created by Sandra “Sandi” VanDonkelaar, who has taught quilting classes at Maple Grove Township Community Center.

Both will be displayed during a Veterans Dinner, 5-7 p.m., Nov. 11 (Veterans Day), at VFW Post #6333, 13300 Nine Mile Road. Veterans dine for free during the event, and all others are asked to donate to help a family in need.

The drawing for the wall hangings will take place Dec. 1, and organizers said they hope to award other prizes as well.

Gallery hours are Friday and Sunday, 12-4 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
