Pictured is a sign at the site of Man Made Lake in Manistee. It describes how a lake was made from the hole left by sand scooped at the site and shipped to Detroit to be used in the auto industry. 23 acres here were set aside, with a spit of sand on Lake Michigan, for public use. The Sand Products Company who had donated the land originally wanted to develop it so citizens got together with various organizations, including the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, to preserve it for future generations.
