MANISTEE – In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Vogue Theatre and the Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts will host special presentations today.

The Vogue will show a free film, “The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks”, at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Through archival footage and interviews with those her knew her, Rosa Parks’ life as a civil rights activist, organizer and political radical is recounted. Attendees are encouraged to arrive  early for student presentations of essays, poems and artwork. This event is hosted by MARJDI, Manistee Area Racial Justice & Diversity Initiative.

From 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., there will be a free program live streamed at the Ramsdell Regional Center for the Arts. “Soul Force: The Challenge of Martin Luther King” is the first presentation of Calvin University’s January Series,  featuring 15 days of lectures. Though the event is free, donations will be accepted.

Today’s MLK Jr. lecture is with Lerone Martin, associate professor of religious studies at Stanford and an award-winning author.  Martin has written for many prestigious publications. He is  currently the Martin Luther King Jr. centennial chair and director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University.

The website of the January Series states: “In his most recent book, ‘The Gospel of J. Edgar Hoover’, Martin discusses the historical and legal context of government surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr., its implications for the Civil Rights Movement, and lessons for today’s social justice efforts.” 

This year’s lecture series includes national podcasters and journalists, a world-renowned rock climber, a French-American jazz pianist and composer, an American legal scholar, and a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Read the full list of speakers and topics at: http://www.calvin.edu/january
